Maritime Forest (trees 2)

Today we drove to the tip of Hatteras Island and drove onto the 30 minute ferry to Okracoke Island, one of my favorite places in the eastern United States. It an island with great legends about Black Beard the pirate and his last stand, a people who have lived here for hundreds of years isolated from the NC mainland, a quaint village with cottages instead of beach houses, little coffee shops and beautiful beaches. What I wanted to explore were two nature preserves where small maritime forests have grown for centuries, some of the only forests of their kind. These hikes were our first of what will hopefully be many hikes in our nation's national parks this summer. While they were only a few miles in total, the diversity was astounding for such small patches of forest! Hear are a few photos of the trail and some of the animals we found along the way. Help me identify the snake! We also saw crabs in the hundreds, toads, ocean birds like egrets and ibis, as well as a few different species of lizards and butterflies. The trees here are tough southern pines, junipers with their pretty blue berries and Coast Live Oaks with great sprawling branches.
