Last night we were supposed to have a meeting to talk about the Spiritual Formation and the Open Door. We do this about once a month. Alyssa told be about a film being shown at by Pittsburgh Film Makers about East Liberty and the recent historic changes taking place in our neighborhood. I suggested we go see the film instead of having another meeting. The group went for it. We ended up seeing four different short films. Two by a student at Point Park. One about a tiny museum near Meadville at one of the homes of John Brown, the early abolitionist who helped start the Civil War. The last film was about the blighted apartment buildings in East Liberty coming down last summer. It was about a 15 minute excerpt from a film on our neighborhood that will eventually be a two hour documentary. I'd love to get a chance to talk with the film's maker, Chris Ivey. His film deals with all the issues of race, poverty, violence, gentrification, and reconciliation that the Open Door is trying to deal with.
